About the Item
Vintage Pierre Chapo S35 “Banc à dos droit” or Straight-back bench executed in French elm combined with the T35 “Aban” dining table.
As with all furniture by Chapo, this piece shows excellent craftsmanship, is constructed in solid wood and was made to last.
French elmwood is due to the Dutch elm disease extremely rare to find these days, and recent editions are generally made of oak or imported elmwood which have a completely different appearance compared to the warm, vintage look of an aged Chapo piece.
Condition: Overall very good vintage condition, ready for daily use. Benches and table have been cleaned and treated with cooked linseed oil as per Chapo’s original instructions.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
