MG1 chair in custom red leather with upholstered back, produced by Sawaya Moroni for Sunar-Hauserman, 1989. Highly collectible. One-of-a-kind red leather custom pieces with upholstered back. Only fully upholstered version of this design that I've found. (See the regular version in photo 7). In this rare 1989 design, Graves is looking back at his work and relationship with Sunar-Hauserman from throughout the decade. Hauserman was a Cleveland manufacturer of architectural elements, most notably movable walls and steel airplane parts, that was founded in the early 1910s by EF Hauserman. Business was booming throughout the war years (steel airplane parts, self-explanatory) but began to slow by the 1970s. The company decided to expand into design and furniture in 1979 by acquiring the high-end office furniture company, Sunar, Inc., based in Canada. Graves began a fruitful relationship with this new expanded company already in 1979, as he was hired to design and build the new "Sunar (-Hauserman) furniture showroom in New York City (see photos 13-14). Throughout the early 1980s, Graves worked with Sunar-Hauserman to design glorious postmodern showrooms across the country (see his famous Houston design in photos 8-11), a famed living room suite (see famous settee design in photo 12) as well as a series of textiles. By 1989, Sunar was struggling to stay afloat financially and although they owned the license to the MG1 side or dining chair by Graves, they could not produce it. Sunar production came to a halt completely that year and the avant-garde Italian company, Sawaya Moroni acquired the rights to the Graves design. Almost all orders (that Im aware of) of MG1 were custom, made in Italy by Sawaya Moroni with their exacting standards. 8 available. Two armchairs in red leather also available. Single owner. Dining set cost over 40,000 USD in 1989.
