About the Item

Crafted in France circa 1890, this substantial antique trestle dining table embodies the honest, utilitarian beauty of Louis XIII furniture. Originally made for communal dining or refectory use, the long and generously proportioned surface was designed to accommodate large gatherings, making it as functional today as it was in the 19th century. Constructed from solid oak, the thick four plank top displays rich grain variation, time softened edges, and butterfly style inserts, all consistent with age and traditional practices. Forged iron diamond nails accent the top and base, adding subtle decorative detail to the table’s honest rural construction. The bleached finish highlights the natural character of the oak, revealing knots, shrinkage lines, and gentle wear, all resting under a soft, pale honey patina developed through decades of use. Almost 10 feet long, the table is raised on three trestle support bases, each composed of turned baluster legs set on shaped platform feet and connected by a long central stretcher for exceptional strength and stability. This architectural configuration allows the table’s impressive length while maintaining excellent balance and generous legroom. Sculptural and grounded, this antique French table works beautifully in a dining room, wine cellar, kitchen, or large entry and pairs equally well with rustic benches or refined provincial seating.
