About the Item
Long table crafted from the rare tropical hardwood narra, one of the most highly prized timbers of the Philippines, valued for its deep, warm colour and exceptional durability.
The tabletop is constructed with a traditional framed border enclosing a large centre panel in one solid plank. This traditional frame construction allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in humidity, preventing cracking and demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and a thorough understanding of the material. The tabletop has a substantial thickness of approximately 3 cm.
The base features a through stretcher, providing excellent stability while contributing to a harmonious and well-balanced appearance that supports the table’s baroque-inspired form.
Measurements H: 76 (to apron: 73 ) L: 213.5 D: 101 cm
The table dates to approximately 1860–1880, a period when the Philippines were still under Spanish colonial rule. This is reflected in the European-influenced baroque style, characteristic of furniture produced for monasteries as well as affluent and Spanish-associated families during the colonial era.
