About the Item
Long table crafted in a refined combination of light molave wood and dark narra hardwood, two of the most highly regarded tropical timbers of the Philippines. The contrast between the warm, golden tone of the molave and the deeper, darker narra lends the table a striking and elegant presence.
The tabletop is made from a single large solid plank of light molave wood, framed by a wide border in narra. This traditional frame construction allows the wood to expand and contract naturally with changes in humidity, reducing the risk of cracking and reflecting a high level of craftsmanship and material understanding.
The base is constructed in solid narra with a through stretcher, providing excellent stability while reinforcing the table’s balanced and harmonious proportions. The subtly shaped feet introduce a distinctly European baroque influence.
The table dates to approximately 1860–1880, a period when the Philippines were under Spanish colonial rule. Furniture from this era often combined European stylistic traditions with local materials and craftsmanship and was typically produced for monasteries as well as affluent and Spanish-associated families.
