Such dinner parties and entertaining must have occurred around this exceptionally grand antique American mahogany dining table, circa 1825! Imagine the possibilities today as this Empire style table expands from a beautiful round shape to grow and grow with the addition of up to all seven of the individual leaves. The Neoclassical Empire pedestal remains stationary as the two ends of the table are pulled away from the pedestal to accommodate the leaves (each leaf numbered to ensure easy placement). The leaves are supported by a clever sliding support mechanism as well as an additional pair of tapered legs concealed beneath the surface that fold down to provide stability. Please notice how these legs fold up and away to disappear when the table is circular in shape. This table retains the open storage container for the seven leaves with an individual slot for each leaf. This antique mahogany dining table showcases the excellent cabinet making skills available in early nineteenth century America as the superb grain of the imported timber and distinctive profile of the base demonstrate. Please notice the tapered column which has four concave sides and slanted corners standing upon a raised quatrefoil shaped base. All four of the boldly carved paw feet are English in origin made famous by the cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale and conceal the original brass rolling caster. The symbolism of the paw foot relates to the motif of an Imperial Chinese dragon grasping the Pearl of Wisdom seen on the finest examples of imported porcelain from the Far East. This marvellous table embodies the latest technology available in the early 1800s and remains as beautiful and useful today as it was when first designed and constructed. Each leaf is 12".
