An exquisitely sculptural, extremely rare and wonderfully versatile, large and slender marble and cast-iron table in wonderful antique condition. Expertly crafted in France in the mid-to-late 19th Century, circa 1870, this showstopping table will add superb quality, gorgeous colouring and an exquisitely graceful antique aesthetic to any setting.
Gloriously shapely, the long and slender stretched-oval shape of the beautifully aged white-yellow Carrara Marble tabletop is extremely rare and exceedingly charming. We’ve never seen one the same, with no straight lines and the curvature continuing the whole way around, which along with its first-rate base and chamfering to the marble underside, wonderfully demonstrates the expertise involved in the marble shaping and highlights its quality and specialness.
The stunning marble tabletop is set on a renowned French Godin (Jean-Baptiste, 1817-1888) cast iron base, which has been refinished in a dark teal hue to perfectly complement the grey-green Carrara marble striations on the top. The strong and elegant base effortlessly supports the rather eye-wateringly heavy marble top, which sits flawlessly and without movement thanks to perfectly aligned drill holes in the marble underside that fit onto the base supports. And despite its incredible weight, this staggering table is, rather surprisingly, easily slid around thanks to furniture pads under the feet.
Reassuringly heavy and impressively sized, especially for an antique marble top table, this truly is a versatile gem of a piece. Indoors or outdoors, its graceful and slender shape ensures that it can be used as a console, centre or library table, whilst it also works very well as a very chic desk and is the ideal elegant smaller dining table, comfortably seating four people to dine, or six if using chairs at either end.
However you choose to use this stunning and versatile table, it won’t fail to add exquisite antique elegance and outstanding bygone quality and charm to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in very-good-to-excellent antique condition. Sturdy and structurally sound, this has clearly been much-loved as an indoor piece as the marble is in fantastic antique condition, with just a few very minor to-be-expected nibbles to the edges. Overall this is a very special table in wonderful antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent for many generations to come – please see the photos.
