Benchmade William and Mary Style Tavern Dining Table, 20th Century

About the Item

Crafted using inordinately thick and heavy solid walnut planks, this fine benchmade dining table is a fine representation of the strong and stoic William and Mary style of Pennsylvania during the first half of the 18th Century. It is a piece built to last the test of time, the breadboard ends affixed with thick wooden pegs, permanently locking the tenons into the groove of the breadboard. The same joinery is used throughout the frame, making the structure permanent and mostly impervious to time and wear. It remains in excellent condition with only the lightest use indicators and blemishes. Two drawers in the front of the table slide out to reveal a hidden box behind each, this crafted like a candle box with a chamfered lid that slides in and out along grooves in the frame. Both the drawers and the boxes are hand dovetailed with appropriate poplar secondary woods, each crafted in the Pennsylvania manner. The table rests over beautifully turned and etched legs and terminates on oversized ball feet, the whole structure locked together with an H-form stretcher with a dovetailed medial bar. An unreal amount of time and material expense went into crafting this piece and the result is very impressive. This is truly tomorrow's antique, a piece that will be cherished and enjoyed as it lives on for future generations. Measurements: 59 1/2" W x 35" D x 34 1/4" H Condition Report: Shrink cracks along the grain in the top. Light scuffing to the corners of the top. Screws absent from the cleats (not pictured), allowing the top to simply be lifted from the frame - this is easily remedied by simply inserting screws, but leaving screws out allows the table to be moved easily. Light color loss and typical scratches from use.
