About the Item

Branco Preto Designed and manufactured in the 1950s by Branco Preto This stunning solid wood dining table by Branco Preto was part of the personal collection of Miguel Forte, one of the founding members of Branco Preto. This is part of a batch we acquired from the Miguel Forte family. This table was an initial version of this model. The same table design was also manufactured with a glass top, which is more common. The fully solid wood top like our one is rare. It has inverted tapered edges, beautiful tapered legs with traditional wood joints, a typical design detail by Branco Preto. Branco Preto had the reputation for rigorous, impecable construction quality. The frame, table top, and surfaces of this table are in perfect condition. Estúdio Branco Preto was an architecture team and furniture store, started in 1952 in São Paulo, lasting until 1970. It is one of the forerunners of interior architecture and modern-inspired furniture in Brazil. The studio was managed by architects Miguel Forte, Jacob Ruchti, Plínio Croce, Roberto Aflalo, Carlos Millan and Chinese architect Chen Y Hwa. The interest in modern architecture was a common denominator amongst these young architects who- with a sophisticated view of architecture, and realising the gap in the modern furniture market in São Paulo in the early 1950s, created a store that offered an alternative of modern taste to the elite of São Paulo. In this they sold furniture made of Brazilian materials and with impeccable finishing: something completely new at the time. The shop became a reference for architects, who would visit it to become familiar with the trends and discuss the pieces that broke with the traditional, stout lines used until then. In these ten years, the team created pieces of furniture that still inspire Brazilian designers today.
