About the Item

A truly spectacular, enormous solid walnut refectory/dining table from a French convent (“nunnery”) dating to the 19th century. The wood planks forming the top surface are arranged into three, nearly square panels for a sense of order and geometry compared to the fine grain patterns of the walnut. Within the deep apron, each long side contains six drawers where the sisters would have kept their dinner service–which is a great feature to benefit the modern interior where storage is ideally out-of-sight but convenient to retrieve. Three pairs of legs hold up the mass of the table that are turned and tapered in a stack of rings. Note that there is the expected patina of fine scratches, dents, and water rings adding to the historic character of the table which has been recently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for its next home.
