About the Item

The rare ‘Valmarana’ dining table is a monumental work by Carlo Scarpa, designed in 1971 for Simon International—the brand co-founded by Dino Gavina after his departure from Gavina SpA. Like much of Scarpa’s furniture, the Valmarana table blurs the line between object and architecture. Its name references Villa Valmarana, the Palladian estate near Vicenza, and Scarpa’s sensitivity to classical proportion is evident. Crafted of wood in a rich ebony finish, it features a well-proportioned rectangular top resting on two monolithic pedestal bases. Each base is formed from stacked geometric planes. Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was a highly influential 20th-century architect, known for drawing inspiration from Venetian culture, materials, landscapes, and Japanese design. His deep appreciation for history, regional traditions, and craftsmanship allowed him to create innovative designs in both glass and furniture, blending artistic techniques with a modern architectural vision. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The ebonized wood has been professionally refinished by our team of restorationists.
