About the Item
This table is one of Melchiorre Bega's most refined and rare creations, crafted in the early 1950s at the height of his Milanese modernist period.
The large circular top, cut from magnificent Rosa Portugal marble veined with salmon, cream, and anthracite gray clouds, almost seems to float thanks to the extraordinary lightness of its base: a fluted central column in dark walnut-stained solid wood that elegantly tapers into a polished brass cone. From this base extend three slender, arched legs in solid brass, taut like violin strings and topped with those characteristic eagle-beak feet that are a sort of Bega signature.
The overall design is a masterpiece of balance between the heavy, warm marble and the exquisite luminosity of the brass, between the solidity of the volume and the airy suspension of the lines, an object that perfectly embodies the sophisticated, anti-rhetorical taste of the finest postwar Italian design.
It is an absolute collector's piece, capable of discreetly dominating any important interior and of recounting, with its mere presence, a fundamental chapter in the history of mid-century Italy.
