About the Item

Cafeteria table called “Square Table” or “Dining Table”. Table in solid teak and brown lacquered teak veneer, known as the "Square Table." Thick, square veneered top with straight sides resting on four wide, tapered vertical legs. This model was produced in three to four variants for Chandigarh’s public institutions. Some have a tin metal top, others have legs oriented in the opposite direction. This particular table was produced for the Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, one of the earliest technical institutions established in the new capital designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Around 1955, the PEC Department played a key role in the technical infrastructure supporting the construction of Chandigarh. Many of its engineers and students contributed to civil and structural projects for the new city designed by Le Corbusier and his team, closely collaborating with the Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Administration. Provenance: The hand-stenciled marking “PEC / CANTEEN - 112” identifies this piece as belonging to the canteen of Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, Chandigarh.
