About the Item
Fine Regency Mahogany Extending Dining Table, Circa 1820
A fine early 19th century Regency period mahogany pull-out extending dining table of small and elegant proportions. Crafted from well-figured, high-quality solid mahogany, the oblong top has rounded corners and a finely moulded edge. The table extends by way of telescopic bearer stretchers and retains its original leaf, allowing it to function either as a compact four-seater or a generous six-seater — ideal for more intimate dining spaces.
The leaves are secured with Cope
Collinson stamped brass clips, a premium hardware maker often associated with Gillows of Lancaster, reflecting the quality of this piece. Three of the clips have been carefully reproduced from the original surviving example. The table stands on turned legs of refined form, each fitted with original brass cup castors. Excellent craftsmanship and choice of timber throughout.
As an early pull-out design, the table requires two people to extend, predating the later Victorian wind-out mechanism.
Dimensions (approximate)
Height: 75 cm (28 ¾")
Length (extended): 164 cm (64 ½")
Length (without leaf): 101.5 cm (40")
Width: 134.5 cm (53")
Additional leaf: 61 cm (24")
Condition
In very good condition throughout, structurally sound and sturdy with no loose joints. All original apart from the three faithfully reproduced brass clips. The surface retains a beautiful original polish and rich patina, showing only minor marks and blemishes consistent with age and use. Fully functional and sensitively cleaned and wax polished in our workshop, with only minimal restoration where necessary to preserve authenticity. Now beautifully presented and ready for use.
As with all antique furniture, minor signs of age and use are to be expected and contribute to the character of the piece.
