About the Item

Regency Mahogany Ebony-Strung Metamorphic Extending Dining Table, c.1820 A rare dining table converting from compact Pembroke form to a full 7 ft 6 in eight-seater A rare and ingenious early 19th-century Regency metamorphic dining table of excellent quality, crafted in solid mahogany with ebony strung inlay to the frieze. The table survives in original and unaltered condition, retaining its period extending mechanism, leaves, legs and castors exactly as made. Its colour and surface have developed naturally over two centuries, giving it an appealing and undisturbed period character. In its primary configuration the table opens out to a full 7 ft 6 in dining table, comfortably seating up to eight. The extending action operates by means of five telescopic bearer stretchers which concertina outward to support the two additional leaves — an ingenious and highly effective piece of Regency engineering. When not required at full size, the table can be reduced to a much smaller footprint. With the extension leaves removed and the drop leaves taken out, it becomes an elegant side table, serving table or occasional piece, offering exceptional versatility for both larger rooms and more intimate settings. The turned legs with original brass cup castors provide a refined silhouette and excellent mobility, while the table retains a warm, well-developed surface and a beautifully mellow period colour. Dimensions (Approximate): Height: 73 cm Depth: 126.5 cm Length, extended: 228.5 cm (7 ft 6 in) Length, drop leaves up but additional leaves: 139.5 cm Length, in smallest configuration (drop leaves down and additional leaves taken out): 68.5 cm Each extension leaf: 44.5 cm Condition: In very good original condition, structurally sound and ready for use. The surface shows a naturally developed patina with small marks and signs of age, all long since polished in. The two extension leaves are a few shades darker than the main top, consistent with limited light exposure over time. There is a slight natural fall along one long side when fully extended, a characteristic of multi-part telescopic bearer systems and stable in use. It does not affect the table’s performance or solidity. Cleaned and waxed in our workshop and now superbly presented — a rare, versatile and beautifully preserved Regency table.
