About the Item

Eugène Gaillard (1862–1933) Rectangular dining table in molded and carved walnut, decorated with vegetal motifs around the apron. It rests on four cabriole legs, molded, ribbed, and carved, joined by a stretcher. H: 73.5 cm – W: 161 cm – D: 110 cm Circa: 1900 (Scratches, sun damage, and stains on the tabletop; restorations) Provenance: Private collection from the Hôtel Majestic in Nice A similar model was exhibited in the dining room of Siegfried Bing's Art Nouveau Pavilion at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Bibliography: – Alastair Duncan, The Paris Salons 1895–1914, Volume III: Furniture, Antique Collectors’ Club Editions, 1996, model reproduced on p. 207 Biographical Information Designer, decorator, and theorist, Eugène Gaillard was one of the pioneers of French Art Nouveau. A close collaborator of Siegfried Bing, he participated in the famous Pavillon L’Art Nouveau Bing in 1900, where his creations were distinguished by their fluid forms inspired by nature, refined woodwork, and a quest for unity between decoration and function. His furniture, emblematic of the elegant naturalism characteristic of Art Nouveau, occupies a central place in the history of early 20th-century decorative arts.
