Louis XIV Dining Room Tables

LOUIS XIV STYLE

As opposed to the styles that would follow from the other 18th-century French kings, Louis XV and Louis XVI, antique Louis XIV furniture is rigid and imposing. It expresses opulence — even its armchairs, with their upright backs, straight legs and lavish ornamentation, look like thrones. Authentic Louis XIV sofas, a then newly emerging iteration of seating, are fully upholstered and often feature decoratively carved frames of walnut, chestnut or oak.

When French King Louis XIV established his royal court at Versailles in 1682, he transformed what was once a hunting lodge into a palace that declared his wealth and power through its design. Until his death in 1715, he reigned with a spirit of excess and absolute political dominance. The “Sun King,” as he called himself, believed that France revolved around him as planets do the sun. Louis XIV adopted the sun as his emblem, decorating the grounds with symbols of the sun and Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. As he stated, “There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces and their precious furniture.” He was a child when he became king in 1643, only shaping his style after he became absolute monarch in 1661.

Reflecting trends in French Baroque art, Louis XIV furniture characteristics included exuberant decoration. There were gilded bronze details including shells, suns, grotesques, lions and classical references like acanthus leaves. The years of growth in the country’s manufacturing, such as the tapestries and cabinets made at Gobelins, led to design innovations. The commode replaced the chest as a storage device, with drawers and a surface that could double as a desk.

The materials were luxurious, such as the popular tortoiseshell veneer technique that leading cabinetmaker Pierre Golle used in his designs. André-Charles Boulle, who became royal cabinetmaker in 1672, was a masterful artist of marquetry, using inlays of ebony, exotic woods and mother-of-pearl.

Italian 17th Century Walnut Rustic Trestle Refectory Dining or Library Table
Located in Firenze, IT
This charming 17th Century massive scale rectangular refectory table, dating back to Baroque period, is a magnificent example of Tuscan rustic craftsmanship. The top consists of four large solid warm brow walnut planks capped on either end with matching pieces of walnut wood slabs. The 3 meters long and 1 meter wide tabletop rests on a trestle base composed of six massive turned baluster legs joined by a simple molded stretcher running the distance on either side making the seat even more comfortable. The simple and clean line of the top is wonderfully harmonized by the roundness of the legs, all with exceptional wood grain and texture and rich, warm great original patina throughout. In typical Tuscan fashion, this farm table is long and narrow, featuring a very rustic but clever construction: two wooden pegs and thick joints on each side allow the top to easily separate from the base for easy transportation. This is "The Table" solid and sturdy a wonderful and warm piece, rich in history and rare. The four plank cleated detachable top is of superb color and figuring. This versatile antique refectory table can be used as a hall, dining or serving table. It has character and is simply stunning from every angle making a fabulous statement in any room both in your countryside home or in the most elegant setting. A number of early solid walnut pieces which we have sold have harmonized very well with modern interiors. Any kind of dinner service will be enhanced by the sobriety of this table that will stand up to no end of use. This rustic and lasting table can be free-standing or would be perfect also leaned on the wall as a huge console...

17th Century Oak Refectory Table, Charles II Period
Located in Lymington, GB
A rare English 17th-century oak refectory table. Charles II-period, ca 1675. The three-plank cleated detachable top is of superb color, figuring and patination. Raised on six baluster supports united by stretchers. The frieze is guilloche-carved on all four sides: this demonstrates that this table can be free-standing. Many of these were only carved on three sides. This versatile refectory table can be used as a hall table, dining table, serving table, or a wonderful kitchen table. A number of early oak pieces which we have sold have harmonized very well with modern interiors. A similar-sized refectory table (in generally poor condition) sold for £17,000.00 plus buyer's premium, in Duke's auctioneers ATHELHAMPTON HOUSE sale, Puddletown, Dorset, UK, 9th Oct, 2019. Nb. The turning of the supports on this antique table indicates a development away from an earlier, heavy, carved bulbous leg, to a simpler baluster leg of the late-seventeenth century. However the guilloche-carved frieze is a hint of an earlier period. Some historic restoration commensurate with 350 years of use. Overall in superb condition. Dimensions: 8’5’' L. (256.5 cm) 2’8’' W. (81 cm) 2'7'’ H. (79 cm). Literature: R. W. Symonds 'The Present State of Old English Furniture...

Early 1900s French Bleached Oak Monastery Table with Balustrade Stretcher
Located in Dallas, TX
This thick, carved oak monastery was produced in France during the early part of the 20th century. Originally, it was likely given a darker, more traditional stain. At some point in its history, its been stripped and bleached, which allows it to be used with a variety of interiors. Note that the table has a unique stretcher consisting of a repeating balustrade. The individual baluster shape can be considered in the style of Louis XIV (large square mid sections with angled, tapering toward the top). The stretcher runs through wide and sloping trestle feet. The monastery table is a cousin of the refectory table (usually narrower and very long). Larger monasteries would have several refectory tables set...

Large Antique French Monastery Table in Bleached Oak, Circa 1890
Located in Dallas, TX
This thick, carved oak monastery table was produced in France, circa 1890. Originally built using large pieces of French oak, and given a darker, more traditional stain. At some point in its history, the table was stripped and bleached, allowing it to be used with a variety of interiors. Note that the table was carved en baluster, meaning that the legs are baluster shaped. This was a key component of early Louis XIV tables, before console legs became popular. Both thick, bulbous legs have molded plinths on top of large bracket feet. The H-shaped stretcher is indicative of an early Louis XIV table, as by the end of the period, X-shaped stretchers were more common. The 2 ½ inch thick stretcher has a slighty rounded top edge that runs through a mortise in the feet. The stretcher terminals slot into shaped caps that are held in place by a large dowel on each end. The monastery table is a cousin of the refectory table (usually narrower and very long). Larger monasteries would have several refectory tables set...
