This is a beautiful large 14ft Vintage Victorian Revival flame mahogany extending dining table dating from the mid 20th Century. This amazing table can seat sixteen people in comfort and has been hand-crafted from beautiful solid flame mahogany. The beautiful flame mahogany top is rectangular shaped and has three leaves which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion.The leaves can be easily removed and stored away when not required. The table is raised on five hand carved turned and reeded tapering legs that terminate in their original brass cup castors. The chairs shown in the photographs are not included in the price but are available if required, we have various sets of chairs in stock that would suit this table. This stunning dining table will stand out in your dining or conference room and will definitely become a key piece in your furnishing collection. Provenance: Ethie Castle Inverkeilor, Scotland THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THIS ITEM IS MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION. Condition: In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned, French polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 77 cm x Width 431 cm x Depth 127 cm - Fully Extended Height 77 cm x Width 251 cm x Depth 127 cm - With all 3 leaves removed Dimensions in inches: Height 2 foot, 6 inches x Width 14 foot, 2 inches x Depth 4 foot, 2 inches - Fully Extended Height 2 foot, 6 inches x Width 8 foot, 3 inches x Depth 4 foot, 2 inches - With all 3 leaves removed Ethie Castle dates to around 1300, when the monks at nearby Arbroath Abbey built a sandstone keep. The castle passed through the hands of the de Maxwell family and into the ownership of Scotland's last Cardinal, David Beaton who was murdered in St. Andrews in 1546.Its association with Cardinal Beaton is still evident as the castle includes a small chapel and the Cardinal's Sitting Room, with its secret staircase to the Great Hall above. The castle was purchased in 1665 by the Carnegie family, who later became the Earls of Northesk. The 7th Earl was a Vice Admiral and commanded with Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. As a tribute, the Earl was entitled to incorporate Trafalgar in his arms and this can still be seen set in a dormer at Ethie. In 1927 the castle and grounds were bought by Glasgow artist and antique collector William Cunningham Hector. The castle is reputed to be the basis for the fictional Castle of Knockwhinnock in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Antiquary.Sir Walter Scott was a close friend of William Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk and frequently stayed at Ethie Castle. Flame Mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Our reference: A3615
