Marco Zanuso (Milan, May 14, 1916 - Milan, July 11, 2001) was one of the most important Italian architects and designers of the 20th century, a key figure of the Modern Movement in design and architecture, with an extraordinarily multifaceted career that profoundly influenced contemporary design and architecture. After graduating in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1939, Zanuso started his own professional practice at the end of World War II, opening a studio in Milan in 1945. From the years immediately following the conflict, Zanuso was a protagonist in the Italian cultural debate: he was involved in the CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) and the INU (National Institute of Urban Planning), and contributed to the spread of the ideas of the Modern Movement. Zanuso was among the founders of the ADI (Association for Industrial Design) and actively contributed to the establishment of the Compasso d'Oro award, one of the most influential awards in the international design scene. Throughout his career he won numerous awards and honors, including several Compassi d'Oro and gold medals at the Milan Triennale. His designs are now part of the permanent collections of major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, testifying to the enduring value of his work.
