About the Item

On offer is a handsome solid mahogany drop-leaf table with center cut shaped corners and bobbin-turned legs. It is a classic example of American historical furniture, blending functionality with a charming, traditional aesthetic. Drop-leaf tables were designed to function either as a compact console or a side table for daily use, which could then be expanded to serve as a dining or work table for guests or projects—still true today. The beautifully refinished top has restored the innate beauty of this piece’s surface wood after a century of service. Crafted in a style that emerged in the late 17th century and then experienced a significant revival during the 19th century—particularly within the American country or farmhouse aesthetic—the defining characteristic here is the bobbin or spool turning on the legs, where the wood is shaped on a lathe into a series of rounded, knob-like forms. Such simple, robust craftsmanship is typical of this style. Dimensions-top extended: 45.25” w x 41.75” d x 27.75” h; Leg clearance 21.75. Dimensions-top panels dropped: 20.5” w x 41.75” d x 17.75” h
