About the Item
This rare matched pair of three-tiered side tables is attributed to Gilbert Rohde, circa 1930s. Each table features thick green-edged glass shelves supported by turned wood columns and anchored by sculpted solid wood bases. The graduated heights and proportions create a strong architectural composition, reflecting Rohde’s influential role in shaping early American modern design during his tenure as design director for Herman Miller in the 1930s, a position he held until his early death at the age of 50 in 1944.
The restrained use of materials, emphasis on form, and functional elegance exemplify Rohde’s transitional aesthetic bridging Art Deco and early American Modernism.
