BLUE JOHN
Discovered almost two thousand years ago by the Romans, blue John is a rare natural variety of calcium fluorite, with distinctive colored veins. The only known deposit of this unusual mineral was in the hills west of Castleton, in Derbyshire's Esperance Valley. First mentioned in the late 17th century, Blue John became increasingly popular in the second half of the 18th century, being transformed into decorative and architectural objects, notably fireplaces and urns and candelabra. These objects much like this table are all the more sought-after as the blue John mines are now largely closed.
The impressive top is veneered in segments of Blue John, known as Miller's Vein. Blue John is found almost exclusively at Treak Cliff at Castleton, Derbyshire, where it has been mined for three centuries. Different parts of Treak Cliff Hill render distinct patternings, or veins, formed from the linings of ancient caves or the fillings around boulders. Miller's Vein, mined in or near Witches Cave on the east face of Treak Cliff, is characterised by a 'thick white lower part divided into two pairs of very thin blue stripes, one stronger than the other in each pair'.
This particular vein has remained popular since the third quarter of the 18th century, when it was incorporated into Adam-designed chimney-pieces and when Matthew Boulton specifically ordered Miller's Vein for his gilt-bronze mounted objects.
This is our Editors choice piece, it is the only one I have ever seen of this type, as such it deserves special recognition, there are two larger Blue John tables for sale, one is a later piece from the 2000's retailing at £30,000 and one early example like this but again much larger for £280,000, a quick google and other examples can be found sold in Sotheby's for £175,000
The table could have a light placed under it shining up, the colours would then really pop
In terms of the condition, the mahogany has been cleaned waxed and polished, the top is perfect, there is nothing other than good honest patina to note
