About the Item
Exceptional pair of 1980s forged solid stainless-steel drum tables, executed with a level of fabrication rarely seen in commercial furniture from the period. Unlike clad, wrapped, or veneered steel forms, these examples are constructed entirely of solid stainless inside and out, giving them remarkable weight, durability, and presence.
The cylindrical bodies are formed with seamless welded construction-no exposed joints, no mechanical fasteners on the shell-and the tops are subtly domed for structural rigidity, a technique borrowed from industrial tank and aerospace fabrication. The interiors of the tables (including drawer assemblies and door interiors) are also stainless, making the pieces effectively indestructible and stable in any climate.
The style aligns with the glamorous, high-polish metalwork associated with Karl Springer, Steve Chase, and other 1970s-1980s luxury decorators, though these tables are more aggressively engineered, with a sculptural minimalism that pushes them toward functional art.
Each table features two lower drawers and an upper cabinet with double doors, all maintaining a clean cylindrical silhouette. Top surface shows expected light wear and fine scratching typical of polished stainless from the era.
