About the Item
A Delightful Late 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Wine Table Of Exceptionally Rare Small Proportions, Or Kettle Stand, Retaining Superbly Untouched Colour And Surface, Having Crossbanded Decoration To Well Figured Circular Tilt Top, Raised On Elegant Turned Column With Wrythen Carved Decoration And Umbrella Tripod Legs With Strung Decoration.
The term Kettle Stand is generally attributed to just about any low tripod type table of the Georgian period and they are most popular items of English furniture indeed. It is generally accepted that in theory they were made to house the kettle in the centre of a room when taking tea, although of course there is no way that all of them could possibly have been made just for this very specific purpose.
We believe that actually this little table was originally made as a typical wine type table for the period, just using incredibly rare and unusual proportions. There is a possibility that it was made for a child, or even a small adult, or alternatively just with a very specific purpose in mind.
One thing however is certain, in modern day living and homes, they make excellent occasional tables, which prove most useful and functional indeed across a whole host of different spots around the home, including the most obvious which is as a coffee table of course.
This paricular Georgian Kettle Stand is really quite exceptional. It boasts great elegance, but also great functionality and practicality. It also retains a wonderful untouched colour and patina, a feature which is generally much desired on these particualar types of articles.
It is very much worth noting that the table is in an absolutely superb untouched condition, having just received a natural wax polish from our restorers before being presented for sale. There is no signifcant historic damage to speak of and although it has clearly had a life and been used it has clearly also been well loved and well looked after.
In summary this article is perfect for both collectors and furnishers alike and we are sure it will end up as a great feature in a lovely home to continue being much loved in the way it clearly has been for the initial 260 years or so of its life.
