Antique English Game Table Flip Top Victorian Oak c1880 Mahjong Square Table.
Direct from England, a handsome and highly versatile antique flip-top game table with a solid planked oak top. When closed, the table has a slim, elegant profile; when in use, the top swivels and opens to double the surface area, creating a generous square tabletop.
The table features superb carved details throughout, including an elegant, scalloped apron on all sides (making it easy to place in the center of a room), as well as meticulously hand-carved reeding along the table edges.
The base displays fully turned British baluster legs, with box stretchers for stability and support. The oak has developed a rich, warm patina over time, with a wonderful original surface that only age and use can produce.
This classic form originated in the Georgian period and remained extremely popular in the 19th century for its practicality and elegant proportions. Pieces like this were commonly found in English sitting rooms and parlors, used as occasional tables, tea tables, or card tables.
Quality throughout with solid oak construction and period joinery, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa 1880.
