About the Item

An Extremely Rare 18th Century, George II Period, Mahogany Games Table Having Well Figured Reversible, Rectangular Dished Top, With Wells And Baize To Reverse Side, Enclosing Attractively Inlaid Backgammon Board, The Elegantly Shaped Frieze With A Slide To Each End And Removable Double Sided Chess/Draughts Board, Raised On Attractive Carved Cabriole Legs Terminating With Original Trefoil Carved Feet. This wonderful mahogany games table is of relatively unusual design and is much earlier in date than the large proportion which you will find on the market. It has also retained an exceptional colour and patina and boasts incredible elegance. With its top on with the polished side up it actually serves the purpose of a centre table extremely well. However, the fun of course begins, once you either flip the top over to reveal the baized card playing surface, or remove it altogether, exposing the lovely backgammon board contained within. There is also a removable chess board, which is finished to the other side with an international draughts board. The table has also been well thought out in terms of its design, boasting a couple of pull out slides to each end, probably designed for counter storage, but also perfect for a gin and tonic, and it stands on very elegant cabriole legs, which terminate on fabulous trefoil design feet, adding to the overall elegance of the piece. As with all items we offer for sale this 18th century games table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that it is in excellent condition and ready for immediate placement within the home. Circa 1735. Height 29in. Width 30.5in. Depth 20.5in. Removable Chess Board is 11.5in x 11.5in. Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
