Louis Philippe Game Tables

LOUIS PHILIPPE STYLE

Known as the “Citizen King,” Louis Philippe reigned from 1830 to the Revolution of 1848 with the support of the upper bourgeoisie. Whereas the monarchs of 18th-century France, including Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, dictated aesthetics through the decadence of the aristocratic court, Louis Philippe had a more down-to-earth presence. He could be seen walking the streets like an ordinary person, carrying his own umbrella and shaking hands with subjects. Antique Louis Philippe–style furniture reflects a sense of simplicity and the sovereign’s passion for the country’s history, such as his establishment of a Museum of the History of France at Versailles, which had been mostly disused since the French Revolution.

Middle Ages, Gothic and Renaissance design informed a nationalist style that celebrated this heritage, with the hodgepodge of influences becoming prevalent in the homes of the bourgeoisie. Cabinetmakers Guillaume and Jean-Michel Grohé created reproductions of historic pieces for the king as well as royal houses abroad. Louis Philippe commissioned sculptor François Rude to create patriotic monuments that paid tribute to military heroes, while designs for furniture published by Claude-Aimé Chenavard, an ornamentalist who conceived widely loved objects for the Sèvres manufactory, further helped spread a revival of Renaissance style.

The rounded profiles of authentic Louis Philippe tables and chairs were preferred in the apartments rather than palaces being furnished by the affluent middle and upper classes. Ornamentation was minimal on the finely crafted pieces, such as large rectangular mirrors adorned with gold and silver leaf finishes and subdued carvings. The popular Louis Philippe commodes were solidly made with clean lines that showed off the grain of the wood and were often topped with marble surfaces.

French Game Table Napoleon III Period - Louis XV Style - 19th Century - France
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Very nice game table on high legs style Louis XV from the Napoleon 3 period of the 19th century. The wood is finely inlaid with floral and vegetal motifs. The legs are curved, the tips of the legs are in metal, while metal decorations are present on the tops of the legs. The table opens to the depth and rotates to the length. The game board, once opened, is held in place by a drawer that opens on the right side (also serving as storage for the games). The table top measures 116cm (45.6 inch) x 58cm (22.8 inch) Very fine and sophisticated work, this table will give elegance to any type of interior decoration. The Louis XIV style is a furnishing style covering more or less the period of the reign of Louis XIV (1661 to 1715). This style is characterized by the majesty and richness of its furnishings. The Louis XIV style follows the Louis XIII style. The furniture is increasingly luxurious, but unlike previous styles, it is almost no longer inspired by architecture. There are two kinds of furniture: ceremonial furniture richly decorated with veneers and inlays (especially with André-Charles Boulle), solid giltwood and bourgeois furniture in solid wood. The style is characterized above all by its absolute symmetry and an important and ostentatious Dimension. The Louis XIV style is of Italian and ancient inspiration. The style emerged with the advent of the reign of Louis XIV in 1661 and lasted until the end of the 17th century. In 1690, on the death of Lebrun, decorator to the King, the style declined and was gradually replaced by the Regency style. The Palace of Versailles is obviously extremely and lastingly marked by the Louis XIV style. His long reign made it possible to impose the unique style of the Grand...

19th Century French Tric Trac Table, Backgammon Game Table, Mahogany, circa 1850
Located in Greven, DE
19th century tric trac, Backgammon game table France Mahogany Louis-Philippe, circa 1850 Dimensions: H x W x D: 77 x 115 x 56 cm   Elegant backgammon game table, so called tric trac table. Solid mahogany wood legs standing on small casters and in brass sabots. The legs are wonderfully, in typical Louis Philippe manner, curved and profiled several times. The frame is veneered in mahogany. The veneers are laid in a mirrored pattern. The backgammon board located in the table is made of partly green colored and partly natural bone on an ebonized base. On each of the outer sides there is a drawer for storing pieces, dice or the like. The loosely laid cover plate is covered with felt on one side, optimal for dice and card games. The other side is covered with the original leather, wonderfully authentic with great patina. Two original brass candlesticks attached. Condition: Refurbished condition. Shellac hand polish. Leather with heavier age patina. Worth to know about mahogany: Mahogany has always been a popular wood in furniture making. The first mahogany woods were brought to Europe from the West Indies about 450 years ago. Wood from far away countries was expensive and so it was only used for the finest furniture. During the baroque period, mahogany wood was particularly popular at the French court and in England, where Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton used the wood for their furniture. Dark Cuba mahogany was used for antique furniture of the Biedermeier and Empire periods. It was used as veneer and was also called pyramid mahogany because of its unmistakable grain. Mahogany has always been considered a very noble wood. This impression was reinforced in the Empire when the wood was combined with gilded bronzes. Since there are many different types of mahogany, there are also many different color variations. Mahogany comes in colors from light reddish to very dark brown. When untreated, mahogany is more likely to be brownish in color. The dark color that we know from antique furniture often only comes out through the shellac. Mahogany is still used today for precious furniture and furnishings, for example in yacht and ship interiors. The mahogany wood used in the creation of our antiques...
