About the Item

An elegant, rigorous and sculptural side table or console, Art Deco, Modernist, Neo-Classical, beautiful construction of circular and rounded (dark oak covered) wood elements, at the crossover of architectural modernism and neo-classical art-deco, in the spirit of (and perhaps by) Charles Dudouyt, France 1930s. This pedestal table, console, or side table is an ingenious modernist construction, where every visible element is essential to both the aesthetics and the structural integrity of the piece: an inverted arch in dark oak veneer, surmounted by two elegant curved uprights supported by two fixing rings and a central element, which together support a rectangular top with rounded edges, decorated with magnificent geometric marquetry in dark oak veneer. The entire structure forms a very elegant console or pedestal table, perfect for displaying a lamp, a sculpture, a vase, and small decorative objects. The neo-classical aesthetic of this piece is a continuation of French Art Deco, while also foreshadowing the more popular production of the post-war period: strong and sober lines of modernist-constructivist inspiration, and a simpler and rather rudimentary quality of manufacture (despite the fineness of the marquetry patterns on the top and the wood grain) which give this piece of furniture a popular spirit. This small piece of furniture is in very good overall condition. It shows some signs of wear and minor imperfections (marks, small chips and missing pieces, barely visible) which actually give it charm and character. It is important to say the veneer is relatively fragile and should be handled with care.
