About the Item

The “ancestor” of this piece, a guéridon, was a small and typically round table that originated in mid-17th century France for holding a candelabrum to light the room or a vase. Even though serviceable, Guéridons were considered high-style court furniture, and like this one, were often supported on a tripod base. On offer is a classic example in the end of the 18th-century Directoire style, with prominent ram's heads and hoof feet, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art. And this one was made with the luxe materials and superb craftsmanship that defined Maison Jansen, a global design firm based in Paris in the latter half of the 20th century. One of Maison Jansen's most famous commissions was the redecoration of the White House during the John F. Kennedy administration, appropriately incorporating American Empire and neoclassical elements. Additionally, the firm worked for (to do a little name-dropping on their behalf) King Leopold II of Belgium, King William III of the Netherlands, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and we might as well mention work for the Shah of Iran and Leeds Castle in England. Frustrating collectors today, Maison Jansen did not always sign or stamp its furniture, making identification difficult at times. Instead, the firm was known for its modesty and for passing credit for a commission to the client, which explains the absence of consistent branding. However, the overall elegance, refinement, and balance are signature aspects of the Jansen aesthetic recognized by experts. Unmarked, but with its exquisitely molded, gilt bronze ram’s heads and feet, supporting two finely honed marble tops, this piece would be right at home in such company. Perhaps in yours? Unmarked. Note: The sculptural ram’s heads add 2.5” to overall diameter.
