About the Item
A fluted pedestal in deep rose veining, this sculptural column is crafted from richly pigmented scagliola—a refined composite developed in 17th-century Italy as a visually opulent alternative to natural marble. The technique was especially prized for its ability to imitate the extravagant richness of stones such as breccia, porphyry, and lapis lazuli, offering a palette of colours and patterns unachievable with quarried marble alone.
This Neoclassical pedestal features vertical fluting and a robust plinth, drawing upon the architectural language of ancient Rome. Its rose-toned body is subtly animated with golden ochre veining and tonal mottling. The piece functions equally well as an object of display or as a base for sculpture.
Condition: Good vintage condition. A repaired crack is visible along the base of the pedestal, with a secondary vertical crack also present at the base. The top of the column is level, though the surface is textured and shows areas of discoloration. The piece remains structurally sound, though inherently delicate due to its material and age.
