About the Item

This is just a lovely piece of furniture that was intended for a religious purpose. I first thought it would have been used to keep the bible in a soft and prominent place but the box size is so square that it doesn't seem right for a book so I think it may have held the objects needed for a clergy member to pray for someone who was sick or to give last rites. It is tall and narrow enough for a sermon to be said behind it with the bible sitting on top and preach when necessary. This piece in in nice condition for it's age but there is a piece of the shaped apron that has broken off in the very front and there are other repairs, scratches and imperfections, some of which I have shown in the photos. The simple line carved design on the top and the chip carving down the legs is sweet and typical of Victorian furniture. This great piece came from an old farm and mill outside of Roanoke Virginia called Poage Mill and I'm sure it was a valued and loved piece in their home. The table itself is 32 inches high, 16 inches wide and 14 inches deep. It is another 4 inches to the top of the box which measures 11 inches deep and 11 3/4 inches wide on the outside and 10 1/2 wide and 10 inches deep on the inside.
