About the Item

--------- French Work, 1930 - Exceptional Pair of "Cubizing" Palm Wood Veneer Columns Creation Date: 1930 Materials: Palm wood veneer, engraved and gilded glass panel Dimensions: H: 126.5 cm Condition: Wear and slight veneer breakage Description: An exceptional pair of "cubizing" columns in palm wood veneer, adorned on one side with an engraved glass panel featuring sculpted, stylized characters enhanced with gilding. Attribution: This pair of columns is likely attributed to Gustave Miklos or Pierre Legrain, two key figures of the period. The design elements suggest: The use of thick palm wood veneer, reminiscent of Pierre Legrain’s work, with an Africanist aesthetic specific to his style. The cubist representation of figures on the glass panel, characteristic of Gustave Miklos's artistic approach. Historical Context and Significance: The design of these columns is closely related to Pierre Legrain’s cubist desk, delivered in 1927 to Maurice Martin du Gard, director of Nouvelles Littéraires. The combination of exotic wood and engraved glass reflects the influence of major French Art Deco masters. In 2016, a similar pair was sold at auction for €395,000, confirming strong interest from collectors and dealers for such exceptional pieces.

Sylva Bernt - Paire Exceptionnelle d Appliques en Bronze Patiné (circa 1950)
Located in NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, FR
------------ Sylva Bernt - Exceptional Pair of Patinated Bronze Sconces (circa 1950) Type: Pair of patinated bronze sconces Creation Date: Circa 1950 Dimensions: H: 39 cm W: 36 cm Decoration: Flying doves Founder’s Stamp: "Bisceglia" This exceptional pair of patinated bronze sconces, created around 1950, features flying doves, a motif emblematic of Sylva Bernt, an artist known for her antique inspiration and her mastery of simplified and symbolic forms. Biography of Sylva Bernt (1910-1995) Sylva Bernt was an Italian sculptor and designer, born in 1910 in Gorizia, near Trieste, and passed away in 1995. A rare yet recognized artist, she was renowned for her public commissions in Italy and France, where she settled around 1950. In 1952, after meeting André Arbus at painter Guido Cadorin’s studio in Venice, she received her first French commissions. At Arbus’ invitation, she contributed to the construction of the Bretagne ocean liner, creating a large stone altar for the ship’s chapel. This collaboration marked the beginning of a close artistic relationship with Arbus. Settling in Avenue du Maine, Paris, she became Arbus’ practitioner, creating decorative elements that he incorporated into his furniture designs. Together, they worked on prestigious projects, both public and private: Decoration of the ocean liners Vietnam (1952) and Pasteur (1961) Creation of monumental panels for Jean-Marie Terrin’s villa in Aix-en-Provence (1955), carved in pink Chassagne stone, inspired by ancient mythology in a neo-Assyrian style. Her classical inspiration led her to produce some of the most refined modern interpretations of Greco-Roman myths. With extensive knowledge of antique statuary, she mastered materials such as marble, limestone, lead, plaster, terracotta, and bronze. Among her key works, Le Centaure (1961) stands out, showcasing her fluid and spontaneous linework. In 1955, she designed a long historical frieze depicting the Viking epic...
