About the Item

A strikingly attractive, extremely rare and wonderfully decorative carved oak amphora stand with three terracotta amphorae in lovely antique condition. Likely crafted in Spain in the early Twentieth Century, this superbly stylish beauty will add gorgeous colouring, outstanding bygone quality and a quintessential ‘Mediterranean Villa’ rustic aesthetic to any setting. Crafted from solid golden oak wood displaying gorgeous, aged colouring and lovely grain patterning, the legs and top have the charmingly decorative touches of fluted moulding embellishment and the front has an extremely rare and standout, highly decorative appliqued apron with stunning floral fretwork carving. The traditional craftsmanship can be seen in the use of mortise and tenon plugged joints throughout. This would have been one of the most important items of furniture in a rural pre-electric Mediterranean household, with the amphorae storing olive oil, wine or drinking water, and perhaps one used for each! As such, it would have had pride of place in the kitchen or dining area. The three extremely impressive, large and reassuringly heavy terracotta amphorae sit proudly and perfectly in the stand and have rounded the edges of their square holes after more than a century of service. They each feature large double-handles, ideal for securely picking up, broad shoulders and necks, large lips and charmingly understated concentric patterning impressed into the bodies, with one amphora having a hard-to-decipher incised maker’s mark to the lower neck. All in all this is a superbly attractive and staggeringly rare amphora stand with three amphorae, which will add gorgeous colouring, super bygone quality, outstanding decorative appeal and a wonderful ‘Mediterranean Villa’ style to any setting. CONDITION This amphora set is in very good antique condition. Traditionally crafted and structurally sound, the oak stand shows lovely aged appeal, having minor to-be-expected marks and bumps to show its age, and has one historic repair to the reverse upper part of one of the front legs, which can only be seen if inspecting from underneath. The three outstanding amphorae are all in wonderful condition, having no cracks and only expected marks to show their age, with one of them having a hard-to-decipher incised maker’s mark on the lower neck. Overall this is a breathtaking set in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent for generations to come – please see the photos. Monumental Trough Planter Stand Large French Rustic Oak XL Serving Bar Antique
Located in London, GB
An extraordinary and extremely rare, extra-large trunk-hewn trough planter on stand in lovely antique condition. Strikingly large, decoratively shapely and wonderfully characterful, this one-of-a-kind statement piece could be used indoors or outdoors as a planter – and could even double up as a stylish champagne bar on special occasions. However it’s displayed, this incredible gem won’t fail to add spectacular rustic splendour and a magnificent aesthetic of bygone traditional craftsmanship to any setting. Traditionally crafted, the oak tree trunk would have been hand hewn and hollowed to create the animal trough and still has the original notched grooves to the underside, showing where it would once have sat on a larger farmyard frame. The present stand is traditionally crafted using pegged mortise and tenon joints and has lovely, slightly curving, ski-like legs in the antique southern French style, which really add to its beautifully imperfect rustic appeal. All in all this is a quite extraordinary planter and an incredible find. Its breathtaking scale (we’ve never seen one even close to this size) and stunning, unapologetically rustic, almost Brutalist appeal, make it the perfect statement piece, which could be used either inside or out, for those looking for a fantastic one-of-a-kind treasure. CONDITION This is in very good antique condition. Extremely large and heavy, this super piece was traditionally crafted and is structurally sound and sturdy. The trunk planter has lovely gnarled, aged appeal and the base has to-be-expected minor marks and signs of wear to show its age, which only enhance its aged rustic appeal. The planter sits snuggly in the frame and can be removed for transporting separately. If using indoors, it could be waxed as preferred. Originally the top of the base may have had decorative securing struts running depth-ways across the top, the peg joints for which can still be seen and which a craftsman could recreate if required. Overall this is a truly incredible XL planter...
