Early 1900s Painted French Iron Pastry Table with Jura Blue Grey Limestone Top

About the Item

During the 19th-early 20th centuries, a table similar to this painted iron pastry table with jura blue grey limestone top would have been used in French patisseries to display pastries. Similar tables could be found in a boucherie, to display fresh cuts of meat. Both varieties typically have the same highly scrolled iron bases topped by a limestone or marble top (the difference was usually that the butcher’s tables had a thin recessed carving along the edges to prevent juices from spilling onto the floor). Our iron base features two large center roundels on opposing sides, both flanked by a pair of volute scrolled feet. An H-stretcher has been affixed to the inside of the center whorl of the feet and finished with two large ball finials at the terminals. All of the iron has been painted a dark gray, which pairs nicely with the 1 ¼” thick Jura blue grey limestone top from the Jura mountains of the Alps on the Franco-Swiss border. True to its name, the stone has a light gray (grey) color with various blue, dark gray, and white encapsulations. Highly sought after for its decorative and practical nature, pastry (or butcher’s) tables offer great versatility. Place our painted iron with limestone top pastry table in the kitchen as a small breakfast table or at the end of an island as a prep/display table. It can also be used as a console table, a drink cart, or as an outdoor patio table.
