This exceptional Viennese Biedermeier writing table, crafted circa 1825, represents a rare and highly refined example of early 19th-century Austrian furniture.
Ebonized Biedermeier furniture was produced almost exclusively in Vienna and accounts for only 1–2% of all Biedermeier pieces, making such works exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Viennese Biedermeier is distinguished by its sophisticated proportions, restrained elegance, and outstanding craftsmanship—qualities that continue to exert a strong influence on modern design. This beautiful table features elegantly shaped twin columns and a sculpturally formed base, emphasizing its architectural clarity and refined design.
A large drawer, discreetly positioned beneath the top, provides practical functionality while maintaining the table’s clean and harmonious silhouette.
The piece is attributed to Josef Danhauser, the most prolific and influential Viennese cabinetmaker of the Biedermeier period. Danhauser’s works are renowned for their innovative designs and uncompromising quality, and are considered among the finest achievements of Viennese furniture of the era.
Crafted from ebonized pearwood and finished with a traditional French polish, the table is preserved in very good condition.
The piece has undergone professional conservation in Vienna, carried out using original, historically accurate methods. All conservation work was performed with the utmost respect for the authentic materials, original surfaces, and natural patina, following traditional 19th-century techniques. This careful approach ensures that the table retains its historical integrity while being preserved to the highest museum standards, without over-restoration.
