19th Century French Egyptian Revival Pier Table with Marble Top

About the Item

A striking pier table from the mid-late 19th century, the console is characterized by a pair of tapered columns with ebonized carved wood classical female figural masks raising a shallow apron with two gilt bronze rosettes flanking a broad anthemion motif below a replaced Carrara marble top. The columns rest over beautifully carved feet on gilt bronze plinths over a rectangular mahogany base. An early mirror is affixed to the back where screws allow easy access to changing the glass. The craftsmanship is impeccable, first apparent in the fine construction with hand dovetailed corners at the top and bottom back of the case while the rear columns taper through the base and are locked in place with a wedge; but more importantly, the timbers chosen both as veneer and solid mahogany are simple exceptional, the pleasing rays of the grain are of top quality and perfectly augment the very finely chiseled bronze mounts. It is an exquisite presentation piece. Measurements: 26 1/2” W x 13 1/4” D x 34 3/4” H Condition report: Some veneer chipping to base, notably the proper right corner; wear to figural faces; early but not original glass with loss to the silvering throughout; fore-aft dividers added under marble top; marble is a period replacement with some wear and discoloration to the stone.
