Add a touch of elegant sophistication, romantic warmth, and authentic antique character with this absolutely exquisite 150 year old Victorian era sewing stand work table (today it would make for a fascinating end table - accent table - hall console - nightstand).
Beautiful quality, craftsmanship and artistic rendering, made in England or France in the late 19th century, exceptionally executed in period Aesthetic Movement taste, showcasing the heavy influence of Europeans love for exotic Far East Japanese / Chinese furniture and design following the reopening of foreign trade with Japan and into Asia in 1858.
Embodying the Aestheticism ethos expressed in the slogan "art for art's sake," beautifully finished on all sides so it can be placed anywhere in the room, featuring mellow wine red, earthy tan and black lacquer panels decorated with birds, leaves, flowers and unique patterns, enclosed by an intricately painted faux tiger bamboo frame (also known as simulated burnt bamboo and imitation tortoiseshell bamboo), integral single piece box on stand form, with a hinged chest lift top opening to reveal the original burgundy red tufted cushion satin-lined interior compartment, above a distinct fall-front panel, lowering to create an extension work surface / display shelf, while revealing a concealed niche hidden storage space, raised on outswept leg supports joined by a fretwork lower shelf cross stretcher. No apparent signatures.

Sturdy, stable, structurally sound, presents splendidly, wear commensurate with age and use, including minor scattered nicks, stable fissures, age related splits, light abrasions, accretions, rubbing, and finish losses. Upholstered interior shows worn areas with tonal sheen variation, mainly to upper left top of upholstery.
