About the Item
An Aesthetic Movement period amboyna burl, ebonised and gilt metal side table. English. Circa 1870.
The table having decorative veneered amboyna burl to the top and tier - the name amboyna derived from Ambon Island in Indonesia, where much of the figured wood is believed to have been initially exported from. Amboyna is among the most expensive and sought-after of all burls. The table is banded in an ebonised wood and gilt metal roundel edgings, which also complements the leg bases. It is is supported by two uprights leading to splayed legs, again with amboyna and contrasting ebonised wood detail. It stands on the original brass castors. The ebonising having parcel gilt lined detail.
There are some marks with use and age, the amboyna showing a wonderful patina. Some minor knocks also. Please refer to the photographs. The table is sturdy, but due to the design has some slight movement. A table of excellent quality that could be used in many room settings.
