About the Item

A beautifully composed 1920s Dutch Art Deco side table in oak, oak veneer and coromandel veneer. This piece is an elegant study in symmetry, contrast, and early twentieth-century craftsmanship. The sculptural base gives the table much of its character: four legs shaped as paired vertical columns, lending the piece a strong architectural stance. Each pair is capped with black-stained oak ornaments that taper into soft finial-like forms, offering a bold yet refined accent. Matching carved black-stained oak details appear lower on the legs, highlighting the joinery and reinforcing the table’s Art Deco vocabulary of dark-light interplay against the warm tone of the oak. The round top presents a quadrant arrangement of coromandel and oak veneer, creating play of tone and grain that continues across both the upper and lower surface/ At the centers, a small coromandel inlay acts as a focal point, while the finely carved beaded edge around the perimeter completes the Amsterdam School appearance. The table is in very good condition, lightly restored without diminishing the patina of age. It is a graceful example of Dutch Art Deco design, blending disciplined geometry, fine materials, and an understated sense of ornament that makes it as compelling today as it was a century ago. Background information Amsterdam School ''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms and furniture designs. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship. The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide. ''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
