About the Item
As the term “accent” table suggests, the intricately carved top and leaf-covered, hourglass-shaped legs of this piece whispers of a journey to a far-off, exotic place. Even if that's not been (so far) the experience of the owner, this table subtly adds interest to an interior.
Such intricate carvings typically feature animals and plants, as with this tabletop. A peacock, the national bird of India with its long tail, struts. As does a leopard on the prowl, with its long, curving tail. Both are set against an exuberant background of palms and assorted greenery.
These scenes are a hallmark of the now, highly collectible Anglo-Indian style that reaches back to the era of the British Raj, when the Crown ruled over the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. After being posted to serve in India, British citizens often returned home with such pieces. This “souvenir” might have come from your great grandfather, for example…or be waiting for repatriation. It will be your story to tell.
