About the Item
Late 19th/Early 20th C. English, a refined example of Anglo-Japanese design, this vintage burnt bamboo occasional table features an octagonal lacquer top finely hand-painted with birds in flight amid flowering branches and fruiting vines, rendered in russet, sienna, and gilt tones on a lustrous black ground. The perimeter is decorated with a radiating chrysanthemum motif, symbolizing longevity and rejuvenation in East Asian art. The bamboo base, with its naturally mottled finish and intersecting stretchers, exemplifies the period’s fascination with exotic materials and Japonisme.
The imagery is rich with symbolic meaning: birds in motion represent freedom and harmony, while the paired blossoms suggest beauty and the fleeting nature of life. The fruit clusters evoke abundance and prosperity—motifs that were widely admired in both Japanese and Aesthetic Movement design. The top is preserved under a removeable custom-cut glass surface for protection and display.

Co., Maple
Co., and similar English makers active around the turn of the 20th century, whose ateliers specialized in Japonesque furnishings for artistic interiors. Comparable examples were also retailed in America through New York and Boston importers during the same period.
