Antique French Gilt Bronze and Marble Neoclassical Style circular side table This antique French gilt bronze and marble circular side table is executed in the Neoclassical style. The piece features a round black marble top with white veining, polished to a smooth surface and framed by a gilt bronze molding. Surrounding the marble is a pierced frieze of scrolling foliage and rosettes, incorporating figural masks inspired by Pan from Greek mythology, or by the decorative “ram-headed” masks found in Roman and Greek ornament. Such motifs, common in Neoclassical, Renaissance, and 18th–19th century decorative arts—including furniture, bronzes, and architectural reliefs—represent mythological or pastoral figures drawn from ancient symbolism associated with nature and abundance. Between these masks, the gilt bronze is further detailed with symmetrical foliate patterns and guilloche ornament. The table is supported on four tapering legs that descend from the circular frame, connected by two conforming stretchers for added stability. Each leg is embellished with classical motifs including fluted shafts and acanthus leaves near the top, continuing to hoof-form feet at the base. Small garlands are suspended from the upper leg mounts, and additional ornamental wreaths link the legs to the lower stretcher. The bronze surface is finished in a warm gilded tone, evenly applied and retaining its original luster, which complements the depth of the dark marble. The materials and execution demonstrate high-quality French workmanship of the period. The marble top is of fine grain and well-fitted to the mount, while the gilt bronze elements show precise chasing and casting.
