The Difficult Table by Cristian Herrera Dalmau — Varnished Bichromated Iron Side Table
The Difficult Table is an expressive, sculptural side table crafted in bichromated iron, featuring a geometric form and an intentionally unresolved finish. The piece is a reflection on the artist's ongoing quest to preserve the iridescent beauty of raw metal, which proves elusive through conventional varnishing techniques.
Despite the inherent "struggle," the table stands as a captivating object, with its shimmering surface and minimalist silhouette evoking both tension and harmony. The work embodies the poetic friction between craft and concept, and the persistence of the artist’s vision.
Exhibitions:
The Difficult Table has been exhibited internationally, including at il·lacions design gallery and in the solo show Uncanny Objects at Espacio sin Título in Madrid.
About the Artist:
Cristian Herrera Dalmau (b. 1989) is a Barcelona-based sculptor and designer whose work operates at the crossroads of fine art and functional design. Graduated in Fine Arts in 2012, his primary medium is iron, though he frequently explores wood, stone, and other materials.
Dalmau’s practice investigates the relationship between subject and object, often treating design as a language, and action as message. His pieces blend austerity, narrative, and material honesty, resulting in objects that resist categorization.
His sculptural chair "Calderilla" is part of the permanent collection of the Design Museum of Barcelona.
