About the Item
This two-tier side table is an expressive example of Amsterdam School design from the mid-1920s. Executed in solid oak, the piece combines sculptural mass with carefully restrained ornament.
The circular top is encircled by a finely carved chain of pearls, a recurring decorative element within the Amsterdam School vocabulary. This rhythmic detail contrasts elegantly with the stepped legs, whose geometric carving introduces a sense of movement and vertical articulation. The lower tier mirrors the top in form, lending the table both visual balance and practical function.
The oak has been fully cleaned and refinished, revealing a warm, deep grain and a calm surface patina. As expected in a piece of this age, the material bears subtle traces of time: a slight warp to the lower tier and minimal shrinkage to the top. These natural changes are inherent to solid oak and speak to the table’s age and authenticity. Structurally, the piece is sound, stable and very sturdy.
A restrained yet characterful object, this table stands comfortably as a sculptural accent in contemporary interiors, while remaining firmly rooted in the ideals of early 20th-century Dutch design.
