About the Item

A characterful side table, very recognizably Amsterdamse School, 1920s - 1930s. The paintwork is attributed to Jan van Zeeland, a designer from the Dutch Art Deco period who is known for hand-painting objects like these. The table has its original paint, it's completely authentic and unrestored. This is a table with attitude - a creature of geometric shapes and character. One that could only have been born in the electric fever-dream of the Amsterdam School. Quite enchanting and slightly bizarre, as the colourful pieces from the Dutch Art Deco period often are. The table legs are in orange and green with black stepped ornaments. The top has purple, orange, green and aubergine. Considering its age of a century, it is still unapologetically colourful. The table is very stable and sturdy, the wood is most probably beech. A great collector's piece for the Amsterdam School enthusiast but also a daring out of the box choice for eclectic interior designers. It's a unique piece, tables in this style are very rare and increasingly popular as interior accent pieces. Provenance: From private Dutch collection (details on request) Background information Amsterdam School (1910-1940) ''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognizable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
