About the Item

A striking and substantial Dutch Art Deco table from the Haagse School (The Hague School), dating from the late 1920s to early 1930s. Crafted in solid oak with a beautifully figured Breccia Oniciata marble top, the table embodies the refined geometry and architectural restraint that define this important Northern European modernist movement. The design is at once monumental and serene: the modenist designed oak base anchors the form with strength - precisely jointed, with rhythmically carved vertical supports. Its cross-shaped structure gives the piece a balanced, architectural appearance, while the soft polish of the Breccia Oniciata introduces warmth and complexity through its natural veining in tones of rose, red, white/cream, and light greens. Measuring 75 cm in diameter and 65 cm in height, this table has true presence. It would make a powerful centerpiece in an entrance hall, supporting a floral arrangement or sculpture, yet its proportions also lend themselves to use as a coffee or cocktail table in a living space. A superb example of Dutch interwar modernism, where craftsmanship meets disciplined form, and the material itself becomes ornament. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The oak shows a warm, even patina; the marble is free of cracks or chips, very light wear consistent with age. ''Haagse School'' furniture manufacturing was centered in the city of The Hague with its rather affluent clientele. In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as The Hague School. More sober than the imaginative Amsterdam School and more elegant and luxurious than De Stijl, this style is also called Dutch Art Deco. After the First World War, young designers such as Henk Wouda, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern design for the interior. They chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright as the most important example. They combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements of the Hague furniture factories. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its straight and geometric, cubist lines and shapes.
