About the Item

A strikingly modernist Dutch side table from the 1920s, rooted in The Hague School tradition, with subtle Amsterdam School decorative detailing. The table is composed around a clear, architectural geometry: a circular top hovering above a second, recessed circular shelf, both supported by four vertical legs that terminate in a cross-shaped base. The silhouette is very mocernist, with strong balanced lines lending rhythm. The lower cross shaped base is made from Macassar ebony (coromandel), grounding the piece visually and lending it weight and depth. At the junctions beneath the tabletop, the legs are crowned with solid coromandel droplets, small but deliberate sculptural accents that soften the geometry and introduce a refined Amsterdam School note. These dark, polished details punctuate the warm wood tones and act as elegant visual anchors. The contrast between the clean, rational structure and subtle decoration in coromandel give the table elegance. An object of balance and proportion, this table exemplifies the progressive Dutch design language of the interwar years: modern, architectural, and unmistakably crafted. Equally suited as a side table or a coffee table, it stands as a confident statement piece which is easy to combine in both classic and modern interiors.
