About the Item

George II–III Period Mahogany Tripod Supper Table, c.1760 A well-proportioned and attractive Georgian tripod supper table, with good colour, an honest surface and practical everyday usability, presented in complete and original configuration. Dating from around 1760, the table features a circular, single-piece solid mahogany top of good colour and attractive grain, mounted on a traditional box birdcage mechanism with dovetailed corner construction, allowing the top to pivot and tilt. The top is supported on an elegantly turned baluster column, raised on a tripod base with well-shaped cabriole legs terminating in rounded pad feet. Constructed throughout in solid early mahogany of excellent colour and density, this is a strong and original example of the type, displaying pleasing proportions, confident workmanship and an attractive, naturally developed surface. A versatile and useful small table, suitable for use as a supper table, occasional table or lamp table, with the tilt-top feature allowing it to be stored neatly when not in use. A full set of additional images is available on request. Dimensions (approximate): Height: 70 cm (27 1/2 in) Diameter of top: 79.25 cm (31 1/4 in) Condition: In very good and original condition, commensurate with age. Structurally sound and sturdy, with the birdcage mechanism operating correctly. The table retains its original surface and has never been French polished, preserving its rich colour and natural patina. There are visible marks and surface wear to the top consistent with long use, together with visible wear around the feet, entirely typical for a table of this age and form. A fine, stable hairline to the top is present but unobtrusive and does not affect strength or usability. Cleaned and waxed in our workshop and ready for use. As with all antique furniture, signs of age and use are to be expected and form part of the historic character of the piece.

Antique English 18th Century Early Georgian Dish Top Bird Cage Tripod Table
Located in Glasgow, GB
A handsome 18th century early Georgian mahogany tripod tea table with a dish top. It features a solid figured mahogany circular tilt-top with single reeded line to the outer curved edge, with a bird cage mechanism to a turned baluster shaped column raised on outswept cabriole legs with pad feet. Retaining a good original colour and patination and original brass catch. This is a better quality example of its type being moderately larger, the top being from a single piece of mahogany and having the slight lip to the outer edge, due to the dish top, and curved underedge, in addition the birdcage mechanism lets the top rotate without lifting the entire table. The tilt-top allows the table to be displayed at the side of the room when not in use (and the birdcage also means the top can be faced out with the legs arranged pointing into a corner, or flat against a wall). This is a typically plain and robust George II example dating to c.1730-1750. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 33.865in (86cm) Depth - 33.75in (85.5cm) Height - 28.75 (73cm) The top can be separated from the base by removal of a wedge in the birdcage. Note: The tripod table (or ‘pillar and claw...
