About the Item

Rare two-part table group designed by George Nakashima for Widdicomb, constructed from solid Indian laurel with hickory spindles. The nesting or companion tables feature Nakashima's characteristic integration of natural wood forms with refined joinery, combining Indian laurel for the tops and legs with contrasting hickory spindles that create an open, rhythmic structure beneath the surfaces. Possibly early prototypes given their unmarked status and construction details. Both tables have been properly cleaned and freshly treated with tung oil, nourishing the wood and bringing out the natural grain patterns and color variations in the Indian laurel. The oil finish enhances the wood's warmth while providing protection. Hickory spindles display their distinctive grain and lighter tone against the laurel, creating visual contrast within the structural framework. unmarked, which is unusual for Widdicomb production pieces and suggests these may be prototype or early examples predating standard marking practices. Small table measures 6.25 inches high by 11 inches wide by 12 inches deep. Large table measures 18.5 inches high by 19 inches wide by 21 inches deep. The two-part group allows for flexible arrangement—nested together for compact storage, separated for use in different areas, or clustered for layered table surfaces. Nakashima's Widdicomb work represents his brief period designing for commercial production in the 1950s-60s, with pieces retaining his design philosophy while adapted for manufacturing. The solid wood construction, exposed joinery, and hickory spindle details reflect his commitment to showcasing natural materials and traditional craftsmanship techniques. George Nakashima stands as one of the most influential American furniture makers of the twentieth century, bridging Eastern and Western woodworking traditions. Trained as an architect and deeply influenced by Japanese craft philosophy, he established his studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he developed an approach that honored the natural character of wood—preserving live edges, highlighting grain patterns, and using butterfly joints to stabilize natural splits. His work elevated studio furniture to fine art, and his pieces are held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Widdicomb collaboration allowed Nakashima's designs to reach a broader audience while maintaining the integrity of his aesthetic vision.
