About the Item

Halabala style round side table by Karel Kozelka and Antonin Kropacek, circa 1947. Oak frame holds inset glass top above integrated wood shelf in light brown finish. Part of a set that won silver at the Milano Triennale of 1947, representing Czech design excellence in the immediate postwar period. Retains original condition with wear consistent with age. Karel Kozelka and Antonin Kropacek established themselves as leading voices in Czechoslovakian modernism during the 1930s and 1940s. Their collaboration produced furniture that bridged Art Deco geometry with emerging Mid-Century sensibilities, earning international recognition at major design exhibitions. The Milano Triennale of 1947 marked a crucial moment for European design's postwar recovery, with the silver medal positioning Czech design alongside Italian and Scandinavian counterparts. The circular form and two-tier construction reflect rational design principles while maintaining decorative appeal through natural oak grain. Glass inset tops became signature elements in Central European furniture of this period, balancing transparency with structural stability. Each example's unique wood grain pattern demonstrates the designers' appreciation for material authenticity within standardized forms.
